Received a cell phone call that came up as Restricted from a Jeff Johnson, Prize director from Publishers Clearing House. I told him I did not enter. He said my cell phone number came up and that I won 5.5l mil. and that I would receive $5,000 every week and a 2024 cherry redo Mercedes along with a free gas card. He said has phone number was (516) 308-9720. He told me to buy two Amazon gift cards at $500.00 each. Initially he said it would cost me $ 10.00 as a service fee. Then the story changed that I would have to changed that I would have to pay $1,000 with my debit card. That I should show the UPS driver the Amazon gift cards. The next day which was a Mon. he told me to go to the bank and pay them $1,000 as a registration fee for the IRS.

He also asked me to read the claim codes from the 2 cards. Thankfully I could not find them. When I told him I was no longer interested he called me multiple times asking for the claim codes. I was unable to block the calls on my phone so I just turned off.

Today someone who was supposedly Jeff Johnsons boss whose phone # did come up as (919) 993-8141. I told him I was not interested and not to call me again

In the meantime I found the claim code, called Amazon and had the $1,000 applied to my account

This dealership is sending out fraudulent mailers with “ sweepstakes” offers. Pull tab lottery mailers make it seem like you have won money and are encouraged to enter dealership to claim your prize. However, upon entering you are given a code and told that you didn’t win and pressured to spend money or buy a car. This scam is not new but seriously needs to stop. In this economy even a small amount of money can really help a family in need and to take advantage of that to sell a car is just disgusting.

- Edwardsville, IL, USA • Jul 20, 2024

Received a direct mailer in my mailbox about a cash giveaway sweepstakes. Involved scratching off to reveal matching numbers to win cash. It said that I won $1,000. I called the dealership to confirm and they said I had. I called the company that makes the mailers (AutoMail1) and spoke with the owner Kent, who said that it was legitimate and I would be getting paid. When I arrived at the dealership, they took my personal information, and then revealed that I had not in fact won $1,000 and only a single $2 scratch off ticket. The lobby was full of elderly who were also there for that reason. The dealership representative only brought me over to reveal my prize after he had tried to sell me a car. The website they had provided stated that I had in fact won $1,000 when I entered my confirmation code on the mailer. The rules on the bottom of the mailer did not state anything about the matching numbers not actually being the price you would win. I believe they have no intention of paying anybody out and there are no winning numbers, hence why I believe this is a predatory business practice
