I needed to cancel my United Airlines flight so I google searched United Airlines Flight Cancellation Phone number. It immediately pulled up 1-855-756-2680 as the primary number so I called the number. I spoke to a person named "John" who said he was a United Airlines representative. John asked for my flight confirmation number which I gave it to him, as that is normally how flight representatives search for a flight to cancel/change. After finding my flight, he asked me to confirm my name and proceeded to tell me that my flight was non-refundable/non-changeable and in order for him to cancel my flight and refund my trip, I would have to pay $550. He additionally said I paid for seat upgrades (which he got from my itinerary) and then said I would have to pay an additional $75 per flight. I told him no I would not pay that, and he said he could reduce the fee to $50 making it an even $600 that I would have to pay for them to refund my flight. I was very hesitant to pay but I figured he knew best since he was a "United Airlines Rep" and because of Hurricane Helene I was not going to be able to fly south because of the destruction left behind, so I needed to cancel the trip. John proceeded to ask for my debit card number to charge the $600 and an email address to send confirmation to. I reluctantly obliged and John said to stay on the phone until I got the email from him. I did and once I received the email (that had my flight information in screenshots and the cost of my flight and seat upgrades) he asked that I scroll to the bottom of the email and hit "I acknowledge." I thought it was strange but what did I know, I don't work for United Airlines. I clicked the button typed my name. He said it would take 2-3 billing cycles for the credit of my flights and seat upgrades to be credited to my debit card. About 2 hours later, another email was sent to my email quoting the "refund" amount and in the email it asked that I reply back with "I authorize, or I agree." I DID NOT REPLY. I was able to contact United Airlines (the REAL ONE) through my United Airlines app, once i realized I had just been scammed, and got my flight refunded. John told me at the end of my conversation with him that if I have any questions to not call the main number, I originally called but to call him directly at 1-833-785-6480.
