AbeBooks Reports & Reviews (15)

Abebooks does not have a telephone. He is scamming gambling and substance abuse. I won't do business with Oakland hills fueling a fire business people. Can't they stop the stress they are creating?

The way scammers are targeting people looking for employment is beyond despicable ...

Got a text from this exact phone number today using the name Sheena Turner, but she said she worked for Usborne Publishing Ltd. offering a job for $42 an hour based on my "resume posted".

First off, I don't "post" my resume anywhere but LinkedIn. Second, my phone number is NOWHERE on LinkedIn.

That was my first clue this was a scam.

But I also replied after seeing this, asking where her job was posted and more details. She is telling me it is Skype chat-to-chat.

I am glad that I looked this information up! Yes, I got the same text as Jennifer. I have been applying to jobs on LinkedIn, Indeed, Upwork and Flexjobs. But I don't know where my phone number is public. Luckily, I use a Google Voice number not my real cell. I just find it interesting that she quoted the position on the jobs I am applying for. So, I think she or they have to be getting it from somewhere, like posting a job on one of these sites. Luckily, Usborne that I found is in the UK so I was curious why she had a US number.

I was contacted by someone claiming to be a recruiter for Abe books by the name of Lauren Weiherer and told me to get in touch with Howard Leff hiring manager at Abe books. He said he will send a check to purchase training materials which i deposited only for the checks to be returned, never received any training materials and was left with a negative balance of over $5,000 .My account is locked and i can't get any access. So i informed my bank that i think i have been scammed.

I was contacted by a “recruiter” and told to message a Mr. Howard Leff on a messaging app. Whoever this is, they are not who they say they are.
Scam alert

I ran into this same scan on UpWork. Same situation on Telegram. The prompts were exactly the same as the ones Nesty posted. I didn't get far enough to give away any money thanks to googling them and finding this page. I also reported the listing on UpWork.

The actual company name is Abe Books and their official website is abebooks.com. They are located in Victoria, BC. So I checked their whois (a way to see who registered websites) and the official abebooks.com is registered through CSC Corporate Domains, Inc. of Victoria, BC in 1995. Yes, 1995!

The web address the scammers are using is usabebooks.com. This domain was registered through GoDaddy on 05/04/2022 and the webmaster is in TEMPE, ARIZONA.

We must report the phishing to GoDaddy before someone else falls victim. I don't want to post GoDaddy's abuse web address here, because someone may think I am a scammer, too. So view the address in the photo below or just go to GoDaddy's website. I will also be contacting Abe Books to let them know someone has stolen their business identity.

Good luck to you all. [censored] scammers!

Got this message today too. Glad I didn't give any personal info.
Scammers be scamming

I go a text from the same type of recruiter claiming to be from AbeBooks. Her number is 1-229-514-4819. She got no info from me because it felt too good to be true. She even stole a name from a LinkedIn contact. Beware!

I got a text from the same number today. Too good to be true, so I checked online. Thanks for sharing your info.

I think... that just happened to me today. I have my resume posted a bunch of different places, and a person texted me to my cell saying their name is Sheena Turner, and that they are a recruiter at abebooks. She said to respond as soon as possible to schedule an interview. She then directed me to download the telegram app and then directed me to contact the interviewer Mr Howard Leff at @Hiring_Howard or (+1 912 225 5034). I then reached out and the interview felt really normal, but I could tell that it was probably generated responses. I didnt really think anything of it and thought since this company is connected to amazon that perhaps this is the way they screen people first. After the long interview, they listed a bunch of required equipment and materials that they would need to send me if I ever got hired. I havent gotten the banking info stuff from them yet, but im guessing that is what is going to happen. I unfortunately was stupid enough to give them information about me, but not banking info. Just in case, I have frozen my accounts now. I felt that it was odd they wanted my address even though they didnt say if I was hired yet. ...I guess I was too excited about the job opportunity. I just graduated from college, so i thought this was amazing, and havent had much encounters with scams. I feel so stupid now. Glad I looked this up. I have included some ss of what all happened. I can only add 10 photos so i picked more important ones. After the end, they say to check back there in the telegram app at 8am my time to see if i am hired.

This happened to me too...not at the payment step yet. Thanks for the info. Who would I report this to?

I had posted my resume to several different companies through LinkedIn looking for a new job. I had gotten a text message from someone claiming to be apart of AbeBooks hiring manager who wanted to hire me as a graphic designer. They texted me the details and I had to download the Telegram app to communicate with the person. I got in contact and it went like a typical interview, asking a variety of questions and probing me for knowledge. Afterward they said I was fit for the job and had me email them my name, street address, phone number, banking info and other things. It spanned 2 days and I was told to upload a check via email to my banking institution, which I did without realizing what was going on. I had sent $500 to a person who was supposed to be a vendor, then had to send $1900 to another person from paypal (which didn't work), then venmo (which also didn't work), then to a third person directly from my bank. Fortunately, my banked locked my account and one phonecall later I realized I was scammed. I had filed a claim through my bank's fraud department to ensure my safety and had filed a complaint through the FTC.
