As part of an internet search of self-publishing printing houses, I somehow connected to an outfit calling itself Bloomsbury Book Publishers. I believe I must have clicked on a link to inquire further because shortly after, I spoke by phone to "Brad Lawson" who sent me additional information and a very professional-looking link through which I could provide details about the book (approximate number of pages, genre, brief synopsis, preferences regarding style and paper quality, etc.) I ordered 20 copies of a 6" x 9", 54-page hard-bound book w/dust jacket: a very simple project that should have taken 3-4 months at the most. I was referred to a Project Manager, "Russell Brown" and his supervisor, "Zack Smith." Although I did receive some editorial feedback within a month of paying the initial fee ($2,535.75), the manuscripts continually came back with errors that were not getting fixed despite numerous weekly (or more often) emails, phone calls, and text messages. Towards the end of the summer, I was asked for more money ($496.13) which I paid. I was promised an advance copy by early September – which arrived in early October, riddled with even more errors. By then “Russell” and “Zack” had disappeared, replaced first by an assistant, “Leo” followed by “Arthur Brown”, “Rebecca Wilson”, and “Emily Richards.” I have mobile numbers for each of these individuals and can provide them if you’d like. I have saved all texts to my mobile phone as well.
After another month -- it was now mid-November -- and yet another request for $399 for expedited printing and shipping (which I paid) I phoned Bloomsbury's headquarters in London out of frustration and a nagging feeling that I might be getting hoodwinked. One of their officials confirmed that this project had nothing to do with Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. By this time, “Emily” herself slipped up; she emailed me from “bellevuepublishers.com”. I also noticed that the invoices purportedly from Bloomsbury have different addresses, slight differences in the Bloomsbury logo, one lacks a telephone number, and one even has an incorrect zip code for its city. I finally received my books Wednesday December 6, but the "About the Author" paragraph on the back cover and dust jacket have an entire line of text omitted. I contacted "Emily," emailed her a picture of what I HAD received in comparison to what I had approved, and requested that Bellevue print 20 corrected dust jackets and overnight them to me -- a quick, simple, low-cost fix that I deemed an acceptable remedy considering the publisher's inept and fraudulent dealings. She refused, stating that I had signed off on the project, the books had been printed and shipped, and that there would be an additional cost. For the record: what I received is NOT what I signed off on, and it is THEIR error. I have copies of all correspondence including photos of what I ordered vs. what I got (I am unable to upload the photo for some reason.) I'm not interested in putting anyone out of business, but given the incompetence and lying I've had to endure, if they're unwilling to repair their mistake, I believe I should get a refund.
