Our CPA had a problem with the source file not found on one of our Quickbook workstations (workstation 1) for QB 2020.

I’m a CFO of an APSSD in NJ (workstation2), the other workstation 1 is the CPA, and the third computer is the server. Our audit is due now so we needed this fixed asap.

First the CPA called QB and was told service was expired and we should get QB 2024. Then tried to shut things off reload, etc trying to fix ourselves had our IT look didn’t work, had to try QB again. I went online thought it was QB and through a pop -up chat “Kathy” said someone would call. Got a call from a heavy accent man “Wayne Anderson”. I asked who they worked for again they replied QuickBooks (Intuit).

They (Wayne) tried to help out needed remote access. I asked again who they work for to make sure bc I wouldn’t let anyone but QB have access to our highly sensitive data. I was told and assured it was again Quickbooks /Intuit.

After a few tests I was told and showed some diagnostic that our file was “allegedly” 90% corrupt and that and moment it would be at 95% which is full and we will lose everything including all our backups. This wasn’t acceptable. I had to have that fixed.

He opened the notepad on my workstation 2 and typed out three price plans. I picked the 1 year that was the most economical of the three but was still almost $3,000 for a year of service so I can get this file fixed and my original issue.

Then they took my credit card said would email receipt and never did. I can’t get reimbursed with out it.

Eric Smith and another 2 (at fake QB) worked on our 3 computers James and Quinn?) and told us to leave them working they would call back.

We would check in now and again. Sometimes see them stuck or idle bc didn’t have a password. Please note - workstation2 worked perfectly fine before this. They wanted to remote access it to see how it was mapped. Now we had no computer to work and the whole day was going by. They call to say it’s working we go check and it’s still not working on the server and workstation 1. Yet they forced me to write in a body of the email on 10/08/24. The alleged "technician" who was remote accessing my computer under false pretenses as working for QuickBooks and Intuit put the email address, subject and body of the email into my email stating work was complete or it was fixed and I went to write "to the best of my ability" and was told I couldn't not do that to continue (I did add "at this time".

When this was sent it was discovered that QB still wasn’t working properly and took over another day or more of work. Even when allegedly complete there are still issues. Some items were only fixed because the CPA was watching and knew how to do something the "technician" didn't know.

We were under audit deadlines and I believed I reached out to QuickBooks by Intuit, this was confirmed by directly asking on the phone, their use of logo's and other verbiage mirroring QB. When I got a phone call I was told by Wayne Anderson and other staff (Eric Smith and James) that they worked directly for QuickBooks and Intuit. I ONLY allowed remote access to 3 work computers relying on this false information and deception.

To induce me to purchase a payment plan these scammers made false representations of who they worked for and most likely created this story and/or illusion of a corrupt file. Gave me no time to do further research I was pressured into acting immediately for fear of losing all data. Being a CFO of a school and the other user is the CPA this was not acceptable. Based on these "facts" we were told we had to do something immediately.

Again, I was told since QB 2020 had expired service I had 3 options I could purchase a $15/byte plan, a $3,000/year plan or some 2yr+1 free year for over $5k. I had a few minutes to act on it, couldn’t lose my data. I even asked how come the day before when the CPA called QuickBooks they said there was no service for QB 2020 and they just tried to sell us the newer version. Wayne assured me it depended on the person who answered at QB. I was fortunate to get someone willing to help (further ensuring my belief I was speaking directly to the QB/Intuit company).

I chose the $3,000 plan, there was no other option I could not lose that file. I was told even my backup would be corrupt and we would have nothing left. These decisions were made with reliance on false information with the intent to deceive.

Again, I would have NEVER allowed remote access to three (3) work computers (1) serve and (2) workstations all containing private information by an unknown company who falsely represented themselves. If I knew they misrepresented themselves as working directly for QuickBooks and Intuit I would NOT have allowed access or continued any conversation from the onset. They clearly took advantage by making sure that we had a corrupt file (if that is true or not I seriously question) then created this manufactured situation that we urgently needed fixed immediately under the threat of losing everything and I had to pay right away under these false pretenses.

Note - I called b/c the source file couldn't be found it should have been a matter of mapping 1 workstation computer back to the source folder on the server. Instead I had now all computers down and not working.

It became almost 3 days of these scammers allegedly working to get us to even use the program, and we lost 3 days of work. Several times asking us to leave while they “continued to work”. I can not guarantee they worked when we weren’t looking they told us to walk away while they worked. Also I have no confidence that they didn’t look at other private files or extract anything or put anything on the computer that shouldn’t be there like malware. I do know that now there are strange pop ups coming in and we are constantly getting calls from other fake QB companies who seem to know our company. Many times when we did look at what they were doing they were not even working or not even doing what we explained for the 20th time. They just repeatedly said "one moment". I am disputing the charge because it clearly falls under deceptive trade practices and I can’t enter a contract with parties I don’t even know who were intentionally misrepresenting themselves.

After I went back and found the website it has no quickbook actual logo (only something that looks like it) also no mention of even being certified by QB.

I confronted “Eric” and he repeated again he does work for QB. I asked him to email me proof and my receipt. I have not received anything. I also went back on that live chat and asked “Kathy” who do u work for she said QuickBooks” I said so I work for Intuit and she replied “ yes”. . I saved the screenshots.

There are several other complaints with similar stories even with the same tech name “Eric”.

Something needs to be done.
