They pretended to be our credit card processor, claiming they overcharged us and needed to correct our billing.

- Huntsville, AL, USA • Mar 21, 2024

The call identified as Wells Fargo Merchant Services…told me that I was overcharged on my transaction fees for the last month…. Asked me to email a copy of my processing statement for the month. I had a bad feeling…so I called Wells Fargo and told them what happened, they have flagged my Merchant Account.

The scammer called and said he was "Wilson from Merchant Services". I was not in the office that day so our front desk receptionist left me a note to call back phone number 1-800-490-7479 extension 7020. He told our front desk that we were being overbilled on our credit card, and to please call back and have our June bill/statement ready. I called back and was transferred to Wilson. He told me that starting 6 months ago we were being over charged extra fees and his department needed to get the process started to correct this issue. He asked me to look on my June or May statement to see if I had a breakdown of fees listed on our statement. He didn't know exactly where I should look, so I looked through the statement and couldn't find what he was asking for. He said "Oh yours doesn't show the breakdown on your end, I'll need you to fax or email me the statement so we can get the process started". He gave me the fax number as 888-385-1433. Then I asked him "why can't you look up our statement?" and he said "It is just part of the protocol. I'll wait here for the fax to come through and give you a confirmation number". Then I asked "what happens to correct this issue?". He said "that isn't my department but you will receive a phone call in a few days from another department to get the process started". I started getting nervous that this was a scam, so I said "I'm sorry but I'm worried this is a scam. Can you prove to me that this is legitimate?" And he said "This is not a scam, but I can send you an email to respond to if you would feel more comfortable." I said sure and gave him my email. He sent me an email from [email protected] and there were many red flags. The email had his name "Wilson" with no last name. It also did not have the logo or name for the company that we use (the one he was pretending to be). Then he said he could wait on the phone while I emailed the statement and he could give me a confirmation number. Then I said "well can I just send a small amount of the statement with minimal information?" He said "No we need the whole thing, but if you are uncomfortable you can cross off the merchant ID number". At this point I was sure this was a scam and I said I would need to talk to my husband and call back. He said okay and we hung up. I called customer service for our actual company we use and they verified that this was a scam and that they would report it on our end. They then said I could report it to better business bureau as well.

Below is the email he sent me:
