The person called with a spoofed Dish Network caller ID and said they were calling from the Dish Network tech department to update my receiver software. They had what sounded like a prominent Middle Eastern accent. They knew all my account information, including my mailing address, down to the last 4 digits of my bank account number and the last 4 digits of my credit card number. They even knew that I paid my bill by automatic payment the day before and how much it was for. They stated that I would pay a one-time fee of $195 for the service of updating my software and would be good for another 3 years. I questioned whether it was a scam, and they said that if I didn't do the update, I would lose channels. They then had me turn off my TV and keep my receiver on because the software update was strong enough that it might hurt my TV if it was on. Then they had me turn it back on after. I'm assuming this is because if the TV had been on, I would be able to see that nothing was changed. Even though I questioned why they couldn't use the credit card or bank account number already on file, they insisted I give them my whole credit card number and told me their supervisor would call back next week. They gave me a confirmation number and a direct phone number of 833-531-3474 and said that for security purposes, I was to only talk with callers that knew the confirmation number. After the call, I called Dish Network myself and talked to tech support. They said the 833 number was not one of theirs and that no tech support would call me like that. They also reminded me that the receiver automatically updates itself daily so there would be no need for a special call. Obviously, I canceled the credit card number I gave them! The individual called back the next week and kept calling. I finally answered and told them that I had called Dish Network and knew it was a scam. So far, they haven't called back.

caller pretended to be from dish network, said my receiver was out of date and needed a new one. I gave them my PIN because they asked for verification. they said they would send me a new receiver, and that I needed to pay $350, but our bill would go down for the next 2 years to comp back the $350. I got the receiver from Dish, I installed it, when I had problems, I called Dish and they helped me. The guy even called back to follow up to make sure I got the receiver and everything worked fine. He seemed a little pushy and kept asking when I would mail the check. But when it came time to mail the check, something in my gut didn't feel right. I called Dish and found out it was a scam. Once they had my PIN, they called Dish to ask for a new receiver, so that's why it looked real. They were just wanting my $350. I'm glad I figured it out before I mailed the check.
