Initial Contact Through Church Website: I was first contacted by someone posing as Charlotte Hughes via the church website. She claimed to be offering a Yamaha Baby Grand Piano that belonged to her late husband and was looking for a passionate musician to re-home it.
Follow-Up with Charlotte Hughes: Charlotte described the piano’s excellent condition and mentioned it was currently stored with movers. She claimed she wasn’t looking to sell it but wanted it to go to a good home, and that I only needed to cover the moving costs. She referred me to a moving company, ExpressMoversStorage, and provided their email and a reference code for arranging delivery.
Communications with ExpressMoversStorage: After contacting the supposed movers, I received an email with payment instructions. They asked for a wire transfer to a bank account under the name Knabe Deborah at Varo Money, Inc. They insisted on immediate payment, asking for proof via a payment slip or screenshot and promised delivery once payment was made.

Thanks for your response, the Yamaha Baby Grand Piano GC1 model used to be owned and played by my husband who passed away last year, the dimension is "151cm by 146cm". It was last tuned sometime last year before he passed. She's about 2 years old and in impeccable condition.

I'm moving my properties to another place and I don't think my husband will be happy if I sell this piano, at the same time, I am settling for a home with less space, so I'm hoping to give it out to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument. I wasn't going to leave it alone in an empty house.

The Piano is currently in storage with the movers I employed to move my properties from my house. The movers can deliver anywhere. However, the beneficiary has to pay moving costs. In the attachment are the pictures of the Piano, I look forward to your reply if you are interested, if not I can contact someone else.

Janice Miller emailed my church regarding a free piano that she was giving away after her husband died. The music director forwarded it to me and Janice Miller responded that I just need to contact the moving company to get a quote to move and set it up. [email protected] gave me a quote green m Janice Millers reference number that I gave them and and said they can schedule a date after I paid. They only offered payment by Zelle, PayPal, Cash app, etc. and I needed to send them a verification that I paid them. Both Janice and Express movers storage stared pressuring for the payment to be made quickly.

Contacted our church through our website as a widow who wanted to give us her beloved husband's beloved Yamaha grand piano -- wanted to give it to someone who would appreciate it and make beautiful music with it. When I contacted her via her email address she told me that she didn't want to sell it or leave it in her house (she was downsizing and moving). She asked me (I had told her that I was the music director) about my relationship to music and playing the piano. I told her about how I loved playing the piano and was told by my congregation that my music was very moving. She then told me that we could have the piano but that we'd have to contact a moving and storage company to arrange delivery. I contacted them via email (that's what she suggested) and they responded with a list of prices for delivery and setup that seemed quite high, and wanted us arrange payment in advance: "*COST ESTIMATE: According to weight and Distance.

$1,950 (Next day delivery + Setup)

$1,220 (3 day delivery + Setup)

$870 (6 day delivery + Setup)

$730 (9 day delivery + Setup)

$620 (12 day delivery + Setup)

You are required to get back to us the preferred chosen plan and payment option below to enable us to prepare your moving invoice.

*Venmo

*Zelle.

*PayPal.

*Cash App.

*Bank Cash Deposit/Wire transfer."

That's when I started getting suspicious, did a google search and found out that the "Widow Yamaha Grand Piano Scam" was a thing! They target churches, music teachers, music schools, etc., and make it very emotional and personal. The "widow" when asked by me why she chose our church said that our values were aligned with hers and even got specific.

Here is one of "the widow's" emails to me:

"Hi,

Thank you for your response, the Yamaha Baby Grand Piano GC1 model belonged to my husband who passed away last year, the dimension is "151cm by 146cm". It was last settled last year before he passed away. She is about 2 years old and in immaculate condition.

I'm moving my properties to another place and I don't think my husband will be happy if I sell this piano, at the same time I'm content with a house with less space, so I hope to give it to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument. I wasn't going to leave him alone in an empty house.

The piano is currently in storage with the movers I employed to move my belongings from my home. Movers can deliver anywhere. However, the beneficiary must pay the moving costs. Attached are the photos of the Piano, I await your response if you are interested, otherwise I can contact someone else.

Cheers,

Melissa."

to me

Hi , I wanted to share something special about my late husband's love for playing the piano. It was more than just a hobby for him, it was a passion that filled our home with beautiful melodies and memories.

I wanted to also reach out and discuss the possibility of the piano becoming a part of your life. I'd love to hear more about your own passion for music and the role the piano could play in your life. It's important to me that this instrument finds a home where it will be cherished and played with the same love that my late husband had for it.

Please take your time to consider this, and feel free to share your thoughts and feelings about the piano.

Warm Regards,

Melissa."

And another response when I asked why she chose our church:

"Hi Robin,

I reached out to the UU Fellowship of the Peninsula because I've been searching for a community that aligns with my values and provides opportunities for personal growth and connection. Their inclusive and diverse programs seem like a great fit for what I've been seeking."

And her response to what I told her about my love of music and abilities and experience playing piano,

"Hi Robin,

Thanks for sharing about your experience with music and pianos. It sounds like you have a deep connection with your craft and a real talent for moving people with your playing. Your ability to blend classical training with improvisation must create some truly unique and beautiful performances.

It's inspiring to hear how music is such a heartfelt expression for you. Keep shining through those keys!"

And then, the pressure:

Woman named Amelia Gabin reached out to church website saying she wanted to donate her late husband's baby grand piano. She requested that the recipient be a passionate lover of musical instruments. The wording of her email made it seem she is not a native English speaker. Reply was sent to her by church pianist. Scammer then came back with pictures of the piano and description of condition, age, etc. She said to contact the movers who were storing the piano to get a quote on how much it would cost to move it. Pianist went and looked at the mover website and it seemed fabricated, "too good to be true." They listed locations in Los Angeles, New York, and Canada. Since church is located in Florida, contact was cut off without requesting a quote. Then scammer's name was googled and scam reports were found.

An individual named Charlotte Hughes contacted out church Office Manager via email with: "Hello, How are you doing? I am looking to give away my late husband's Yamaha baby grand piano to a passionate instrument lover, so please let me know if you will take it or have someone who will care for it. Regards, Charlotte Hughes." As the music pastor I reached out to explain that we would like to acquire it for our school of music if that was acceptable. "Charlotte" responded: "Hi *****, Thanks for your response, the Yamaha Baby Grand Piano GC1 model used to be owned and played by my husband who passed away last year, the dimension is "151cm by 146cm". It was last tuned sometime last year before he passed. She's about 2 years old and in impeccable condition. And yes, I'm trying to reachout to people, organizations, schools or music studios for anyone interested in rehoming a Yamaha baby grand piano. As long as it's a passionate instrument lover who will care for it. I'm moving my properties to another place and I don't think my husband will be happy if I sell this piano, at the same time, I am settling for a home with less space, so I'm hoping to give it out to someone who is a passionate lover of the instrument. However, the beneficiary has to pay moving costs. In the attachment are the pictures of the Piano, I look forward to your reply if you are interested, if not I can contact someone else. Regards, Hughes." I reached out to say that I was indeed interested. She responded: "*****, You need to contact the movers and make an arrangement as regards the moving process. I would like you to take some pictures/videos when they arrive at your address. Here is the mover's information: ([email protected]) just let them know that Mrs. Charlotte Hughes, referred you with the Reference Code: SEIL132PH. Make sure you send an email for a faster response. Most importantly, provide your delivery address for a delivery quote. Once you are in touch with the movers kindly also let me know so that I can sign off the piano. Thanks, Hughes." I reached out to the movers with the necessary information. They responded with the following: "ATTENTION: *****, Please find below the estimated cost for delivery to your location. * Referral ID: (SEIL132PH) * Item/Name: Yamaha Baby Grand Piano * Item/Package Weight: 574lbs * Dimensions: Length 5' 1" (151 cm), Width 5" (146cm)" * Item Provider: Mrs. Charlotte Hughes. Below you find the cost estimates of delivery to your provided address as highlighted below: Name: @@@@@ Address: ##### Tel: ##### (set up inclusive) *COST ESTIMATE: According to weight and Distance. $1,950 (Next day delivery + Setup) $1,220 (3 day delivery + Setup) $870 (6 day delivery + Setup) $730 (9 day delivery + Setup) $620 (12 day delivery + Setup) You are required to get back to us the preferred chosen plan and payment option below to enable us to prepare your moving invoice. *Venmo. *Zelle. *PayPal. *Cash App. *Bank Cash Deposit/Wire transfer. Thanks for your understanding; We serve for your comfort. Sincerely, Erin Leyen (Moving Department E.M.&.S)." I expressed a desire to go with one of the methods and copied our Business Manager in the email. I emailed Charlotte to let her know where we were in the process. She replied: "Great! I look forward to seeing the pictures/videos of the piano from you when they arrive. You should also check your email folder (Spam) for their messages, I sometimes find mine there too. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks, Hughes." I then received an email from the movers: "Dear *****, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to reach out to confirm whether you are ready to proceed with the payment for the delivery. If so, we are prepared to provide you with the necessary payment details promptly. Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you're ready to finalize the payment, and I will ensure that the payment details are sent to you promptly. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. Looking forward to your response. Thanks for your understanding; We serve for your comfort. Sincerely, Dr. Erin Leyen. (Delivery Department CWMS)" I noticed the "Dr." in the name, and that seemed a bit "off" to me, so in doing a bit more research, I found that others has similar experiences. On their website I found they have an Ontario address with a BC number... (604) 820-4719 along with a list of other random addresses. At that point I cut all ties.

The scam was as described above. My wife was told by a person who received the email about the free piano. My wife contacted Charlotte Hughes who went into her husbands recent death and the piano couldn’t be sold but given away. We contacted by email the moving company, Express Movers & Storage and a Dr Erin Leyen sent the shipping prices including set up fees. We paid the shipping fee and were told then we were responsible for the 139 days of storage at $9.70 per day and the moving company wanted another $1348.30. I immediately decided against getting the piano and asked that my wire transfer be returned

A lady named Sophia Thompson sent church websites an email to see if someone wanted a 2 year old Yamaha baby grand piano that her late husband played and she needed to give it to someone since she was downsizing her home. She did not want to sell it but give it to someone who will only pay delivery costs from her moving company. Once contacted she sent some pictures that look legit. She provides a reference code SEIL132AT and says to contact [email protected] to set up delivery. I checked out the website associated with this. Oddly the team link on their site had a picture of a young woman named Sophia Thompson - the same name as the lady emailing. Other names listed on their site with model photos are Emma Wilson and David Johnson. Addresses listed on their site are 19401 Business Ctr Dr., Northridge CA 91324 United States, 118 S 3rd St #30, Brooklyn NY 11249, United States and 945 Wilson Ave #7 Toronto ON M3K1E8 Canada. When I looked up those addresses they are real addresses for other moving companies which are real movers: Northstar, Sven, and Let's Get Moving. When I called these companies, they said they are not associated with Express Movers and Storage and they have heard of the fly by night scam already. The phone numbers listed on their site are not real. (312) 752-2745 goes to a voicemail. (604) 820-4719 goes to a bank in Vancouver. Photo gallery has stock photos that you can find on the web and are not related to moving or storage. Realizing from their first email with the questionable choice of wording, I pulled the string a little. When they send you an email they ask for the following :

?"Welcome To Express Movers & Storage. Move with Ease Today!

Please provide the following information to Welcome To Express Movers & Storage:
