Scammer: selling a 2001 white jeep.

Right now I'm in a military base in Omaha, NE, we are training, getting ready for deployment. My Jeep is sealed and stored in our Military Deposit here in Omaha, ready for shipping. Also, I want to told you that my incoming and outgoing calls are restricted, so I can't call you. I am only allowed to check my email several time a day. Hope that you understand. Due to the fact that this is a large transaction I would like it be handled by Marketplace. They will send you the invoice with all payment details. I will manage the shipping and all delivery fees so the total price is $1.400, no more, no less. After you make the payment to them, in 2-3 working days you'll get my Jeep and you'll have 5 days testing period, time in which you can inspect and drive my Jeep. After those 5 days, when you decide to keep it Marketplace will release the payment to me. I need to know if you are still interested, so I can ask Marketplace to send you the details on this deal. If you are interested, please include in the next email your contact information for Marketplace invoice (full name, shipping address and phone number), so we can start the procedure. Thanks, hope to do business with you soon! I attached you some pictures

The shipping is covered by my Unit so it can be shipped anywhere in US territory.

Me: a few emails back and forth.

1. Morning. Does the Jeep run? Where are you located?

2. Hi. We would like to see the Jeep. We're interested. When can we see it? Where are you located?

3. We are in Greeley Co. Can you ship to that area?

4. Can we see the Jeep in person. We are willing to drive to meet you and see the Jeep in person. Can you give me the VIN#as well. I'd like to run it by my insurance.

NEVER HEARD BACK FROM THIS PERSON. We waited a few days.

Me to BBB: Concerned citizen. We believe we were being scammed. We have lots of military family and dont believe this would actually happen. We are sad to hear that someone would use our brave men and women to do such a scam.

I was looking at FB Marketplace and saw a car for sale. When I messaged the seller she said to contact her Mother as she was selling it. I contacted her by email and the seller said she was going through ebay motors to sell it. So when I agreed to buy it, she said that ebay would send me information. I did get information from ebay, which looked legitimate. However, I called ebay to check on the transaction # and how payment is usually made. Ebay told me that the transaction # did not exist and that they don't use ebay gift cards as payment. They said that this was probably a scam.

I saw an ad about a woman that had a 2008 Toyota Camry for sale, for only $1,600. It had a good amount of miles on it but I wanted to know more information. She said was stationed in a military base in Nebraska, and that she needed to get rid of the car, because she was leaving the country soon. I was told the transaction would be handled through Facebook Marketplace and advise that I would receive the car within 3 business days. I was was sent the information through email and the terms and conditions, but I had to submit the payment through eBay gift cards to ensure the payment. There was a number provided for me to call when payment was ready, I provided the information and the call agent said the car would be delivered in 3 business days after my payment was verified. I received and email 2 days later that said they could not complete my transaction until I submitted an insurance deposit of $1,000, it was to protect the car from being transported to me. I didn’t have the money to make that deposit so I advised the call agent (different person this time) to cancel the transaction. He apologized and advised he would send me an email about the steps explaining the refund process within 5 minutes. I waited 30 minutes, received no email, so I called back several times and no one answered.

The seller isn’t responsible for insurance, the buyer is. Never deal with anyone asking for “insurance payments” when purchasing a vehicle. And if they are not close enough to where you can meet them and see the car, it’s not safe to indulge. More than likely you are dealing with a scammer.

Person is selling a 2005 Honda CR-V clean car 73000 miles $1600 only problem you have to purchase 8 EBAY gift cards for $200 then they ship the car in about a week

No one uses eBay gift cards to sell a car. Give them those gift card codes and you will never hear from them again. More than likely, they are in India or Nigeria. This is a popular scam.

I contacted a seller on Facebook Marketplace regarding a Kubota Tractor 4x4 loader tractor with 82 hours, 47 hp Diesel engine, live independent hydraulic PTO and Hydrostatic power steering. The price is firm, $5,000. When I asked why so cheap, seller claimed that it was because her husband had died 1 month ago (guy had had a heart attack) and "it brings me bad memories. "My daughter and I decided to sell the house and so we moved with my parents in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas trying to start a new life. "I want to use Amazon's Service for the safety of both of us, so if you’re interested in purchasing the machine just email me with your full name, P.O. Box or address including the zip code and phone number, so I can notify Amazon that you are selected as my possible buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure."

I contacted the "fake amazon number provided by seller on the body of e-mail (If you need help to complete your payment, contact Amazon Customer Support Department at +1-206-309-2968) got no answer initially (it would just ring and then hang up) then after 5 mins they called back. Guy had an accent, said that Amazon would deliver the tractor and to call back when I had $2,500 deposit worth of Amazon gift cards. BEWARE!

I'd hate to know that someone else has been targeted and gotten scammed in this case they asked for ($5,000). The next ad may be more. That's why am reporting it.

Thank you BBB.org/

Hi again Sandy,

Right now I'm in a military base ( Omaha,Nebraska ). We are training, getting ready for leaving the country.

The delivery process will be managed by me. I think I can have it there at your home address within 3-4 working days(for free).

It will come with a clear title and reg. I am a member of the Facebook Marketplace buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested so I can ask Facebook Marketplace to send you the details on this deal.

If interested just email with your legal name (your right full name 'cause it will appear on the papers), full postal address where you want the truck delivered and your cell phone # where you can be reached so we can get the ball rolling.

Thank you!

A truck appeared on Facebook for sale by owner. when I agreed with the person that I wanted to buy the truck I was sent an invoice from "Facebook marketplace" . The truck was $2500 I was told to pay the balance with Green Dot prepaid cards. I did this and they told me the truck would be at my house in three days. Two days later they emailed me telling me that shipping had stopped. I was required to buy $1000 insurance. I did this. This happened the middle of december 2017. No truck. When I call them now they simply hang up on me. I have all of the numerous emails documented.

Facebook Marketplace does NOT assist in selling or delivery of items. It’s merely an advertisement platform. And anyone asking you to send gift cards is a clear sign of a scammer. You need to file a police report immediately, and if you purchased these cards with your bank account, you can take your evidence to your bank and request your money back. You will more than likely get it back because in the United States your bank funds are secured and insured by the FDIC. The bank will go after these people and investigate, meanwhile issuing you a provisional credit. Many people don’t know about this and think they must accept loss. Be careful, though. The bank will only give back this amount of money once. They expect you to be more cautious after. Good luck.
