Total money lost $5,672
Type of a scam Home Improvement
The estimate was 5 days at $7,320, Invoice #1114. We accepted this since neither he nor we knew what materials or additional equipment might be needed.
We met on-site 3 times. A certificate of insurance & 3 references’ contact info were provided. All gave very positive reviews of his work and his character.
Per his request, we provided a $3,000 deposit, but he refused to provide a contract for our signature, saying that it was a matter of “trust”. With this, he told us we were then committed to the full amount of the original estimate, i.e., $7,320.
The work took less than 2 ½ days, July 24 to July 26, 2023 with less than satisfactory workmanship. Shortly after noon on July 26, Mr. Gray came, with two employees, demanding full payment for the original 5 day estimate, despite my husband having kept track of their hours, equipment, and materials used.
Mr. Gray was absolutely unwilling to discuss the fees. He was loud, bullying, verbally threatening, intimidating, and physically aggressive, whirling around and thrusting his fists in the air. He threatened to tear out our newly reconstructed steps, and said numerous times "there would be repercussions" and that he would “own our house.”
After being verbally abused, threatened, and bullied, for over an hour, we “negotiated” for one extra work day for two of his men to come and do fence repair, along with several other tasks. We foolishly paid the remaining $4,320 and deeply regret being intimidated, scared, and gouged.
His demeanor and actions were very distressing and severely traumatized me.
Later, using my husband’s records we estimated labor cost, on and off site, at $23/hr, the national average wage for hardscape workers. Materials cost $323. With 20% contractor’s fee, fair cost for our job was $1,648. Consequently, we were coerced & scammed out of $5,672, paying for less than satisfactory work and work not done.
