Scammer impersonated himself as an HPD officer Lt. Aron Cook badge number 92413. Instructed me to stay on the line with him and not to mute him for the duration of the scam call. He claimed I had missed jury duty this morning and was in contempt of court for failing to appear. He had my previous address on file and said that I had received and signed my jury duty notice at that address but since I did not appear for court this morning, he was doing a courtesy call to assist me with paying off my bail through their terminal station and have my warrants removed. He had another person call me after the first 12 minutes from (808)529-3111 so I could verify for myself that I was being contact by his captain at the Honolulu Police Department. This person instructed me to google the phone number he was calling from so I could see for myself it was the police department. After I confirmed that I see the police department uses this phone number he hung up and the original scammer Lt. Aron Cook called me back from (808) 246-8520 and told me to stay on the line with him until I arrived at the police station. He stated that I needed to go to 1234 Beretania Street (this location showed up as Safeway) with $2000.10 in cash to post bail and remove my warrants for arrest first to avoid being taken into custody upon arrival at the Police Station. He said if I went to the police station first that I would most likely be incarcerated until Tuesday (6 days from today) to appear before a judge. He said they would not accept any checks, credit cards, debit cards, or money orders. Only cash. I explained I would need to go to the bank first to withdraw that amount of money then he told me to make sure I had my proof of residency with me such as a bill as well since my ID had my old address. I told him I would need to go home for that, and he asked me how long that would take, I said about 20-30 minutes. During my drive home I asked multiple question such as where this officer liked to eat near the station, he claimed he did not eat out because he was a vegan, and he had only been at HPD for about 17 months but was originally from Kentucky. He also stated his wife liked to take his kids to "Dukey's" since he is at work all the time. He asked if I knew where that was. I asked what he liked to do on the island, and he explained that he only like to play basketball at home with his kids. I asked what street he lived on, and he declined to give me personal information, so I asked for his zip code, and he said a 4-digit zip code then corrected himself that he lived in the Waimanalo area "which is the bottom of the island". The more I asked questions the more he seemed unsure how to answer. Once I got home, I used a different phone to call the Honolulu police department to verify if this person was a police officer and a woman from the human resources department informed me that it was a fake badge number and to hang up the call. She explained it was a scam and that HPD would never ask for cash in that way, so I hung up on the caller.

I was driving home on a Friday after a long day of work, I received this phone call telling me that I failed to show up in court that day as I have been assigned as a juror for a murder trial. The individual said that he was calling from Honolulu Police Department. Because I didn’t show up for a murder trial, I am being charged a fee and the male individual told me to come up with $15,000 as a bond or else someone will arrest me and go to jail. Also, he told me not to share this to anyone as the case is not to be discussed because this is a murder trial.

It really got me, he tried to get me to go to the bank. Also he made me stop so I could talk to him. He provided a website where the Honolulu Police Department is located with their phone number and to make it more believable, he made me call that number.

I am so mad at myself because I believed it and I was so worried that I was going to jail. I don’t remember getting a letter of a juror assignment and I told the guy this and he said that this happens all the time.

Anyways, when I finally got home, I told my husband and he laughed and said it was a scam and he said they try calling again and he’ll give them a piece of their mind.

Anyways, because I refuse to provide any of my financial information, the individual told me he was going to call early morning the next day and to make sure that I will have my payment information.

When I got home that night, I heard from the local news that the Honolulu Police department’s number had been the subject of spoofing.

The individual tried calling back many times the next day, of course, I did not answer.
