Mermaid Publishers USA in Houston, Texas is a company I've had the misfortune of doing business with since July 9th, 2024 when I gave them $2000.00 to get two different books published. There were a total of three transactions. The second transaction was for Audio Books for $2,400.00 ($1,200.00 per book). And the third transaction was for $1700.00 for Social Media Venue/Book Signing Event. It got to the place where I had to make a dispute on the last two transactions ($2,400.00 + $1,700.00 = $4,100.00). I did not dispute the transaction for the publishing of the books. My credit card company ruled in my favor on these two transactions. My intention for making this complaint to the Better Business Bureau in Houston is to steer unaware authors away from Mermaid Publishers USA. This nightmare ended with Mermaid Publishers USA telling me that they were going to give my two books a new author name, sell the books, and keep all the profit. That's the kind of company they are. But that's how it ended. A lot happened before it got to this point. I have reported this company to law enforcement authorities, and I have filed a legitimate complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Mermaid Publishers has gained access to my PayPal account. And I have documentation to prove it. PayPal caught it, and no funds were taken out of my account. But it is undeniable that it was Mermaid Publishers who were in the account. My credit card company ruled in my favor on these last two transactions, because of the determination they came to in their investigation. As I worked with the Senior Production Manager, Ashley Clement ([email protected]; 469-638-2461) on the editing of the two books (and they did a sloppy editing job), one of their Book Consultants, Martin Spencer (469-285-7571), contacted me about making the books into Audio Books. The cost was $2,400.00 ($1,200.00 per book). It sounded like a good idea, so I purchased the Audio Books. They gave me samples of people to choose from who did Voice Narration. I chose a lady by the name of Jessica Brohn, who sounded American in Mermaid Publishers sample, as she needed to sound for the main protagonist of one the books. But when I Googled Jessica Brohn - Voice Narrator, Jessica Brohn was based in London, England, and she had a British accent. This was unacceptable in regard to the books. Also, Martin Spencer sold me on the idea of giving my books exposure on a number of social media venues, where I would be interviewed at a book signing, and a recording of that interview would be uploaded to these respective venues. The initial cost was $1,700.00, and I was told that the book signing would be in Spanish Fort, Alabama, which is just across the bay from where I live in Mobile, Alabama. Martin Spencer called me a few weeks later and said that the date of the book signing would be on November 9th, 2024, and that it would either be in Montgomery, Birmingham, or Huntsville, Alabama, quite a distance from Mobile, Alabama. He knew the date of the book signing event, but he didn't know the location. Everyone that I mentioned that to found it very suspicious. I asked him what happened to Spanish Fort, and Martin said that I must not have been paying attention to him. I didn't even know there was a Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Spanish Fort until he told me. Also, he insisted that I would need to purchase a total of 400 books (200 books per book) to have available at the book signing. This, obviously, appeared to be a bait-and-switch sales tactic, bumping a $1,700.00 sale up to $4700.00, because he said the total cost of the 400 books would be $2,929.00. I told him that I would order the books from Amazon (because I wanted to stay in control of the situation), as I was seriously doubting, at this point, that there really was a book signing event. He insisted that I get the books through him because I wouldn't want people seeing me set up my own books. That statement came across extremely lame, as I seriously doubted that 400 books would be needed for a one day book signing. I told him that I was not, under any circumstances, going to get the books through him. I called the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Spanish Fort, Alabama to speak with the Manager there, and she said there was something seriously wrong with Martin Spencer knowing the date of the book signing event and not knowing the location. She said even extremely well-known authors would only have 30 books at the most for a one day book signing. Martin Spencer did not see the need to stress the importance of the interview, doing it effectively, so there would be a good presentation on the social media venues. He operated totally on greed, and he was just after getting himself a commission on 400 books. All the people at Mermaid Publishers are like this. They do not tell the truth, they bamboozle, they have no people skills, they do not listen to you, they are rude, they dodge sincere questions, and now yesterday, I received an email from the Compliance Manager, Leo Smith ([email protected]), to inform me that Mermaid Publishers is going to give my book another author name (other than mine), sell the books, and take all the profit, despite the fact that I paid to have both books published. Poor, unsuspecting book authors need to know about Mermaid Publishers USA. These people are brazen, and it doesn't phase them one bit that they do business in such a manner.
