Filed for LLC weds, got this mail Saturday. Said New York certificate of status is issued by Secretary of State and may be required for loans to renew business licenses or for tax or other business purposes.

- Ithaca, NY, USA • Oct 27, 2024

I received the document in the mail yesterday, several days after NY State filed my articles of incorporation. The company requests $87.25 to receive a certificate of status. I have already paid NY State the fee for this document. I have researched this is a scam. The mailing address is a UPS store in Albany. Thank you.

We just filed for a non-profit company with NY State. Less than 2 weeks later we receive in the mail a letter that sounds like it is from the State of New York stating "Congratulations on registering your business with the State of New York. Your Articles have been filed with the secretary of state and are complete..."

It goes on to say that I need to fill out the bottom form and send it in along with $87.25 for a "certificate of Status". EVERYTHING about the letter makes it seem like it's part of NY State except TINY type at the bottom that says "this is not a government agency."

It was only by catching that type –that was easily overlooked– that I realized this was a scam. Also they only take checks or money orders.

It is stressful to make sure you're doing everything correctly to set up a non-profit. You shouldn't be dealing with such unscrupulous people as well.

Pretending to be a government institute, or collecting for them

Date: Sent on 9/22/22 Amount requested: $87.25 Recently filed for LLC in NY state. Received a letter that looks very official for the NY Certificate Service. NY state already offers this service for $25. Did a search and discovered this is a known scam.

Received a letter via mail stating congratulations on registering your business with the state of New York. Below is a form for your registered business and to send a check or money order for $87.25 for a New York certificate of status. This is a scam - NYS does not send you or ask you to get a certificate of status unless you ask them on the nys gov site.

Asked me to send a check for $85.25. Read about similar experience if others so wanted to report as well. I did not pay the amount due to reading others’ comments. I tore up the paperwork already but came on thick yellow, official-looking paper, can see how it is so successful.

Registered a new LLC and got a letter from these people to pay $87.25 for a NY Certificate of Status. It’s complete BS and makes themselves look like a government agency.

I received this semi-official looking notice in the mail requiring me to pay $87.25 for a Certificate of Status for my newly-registered LLC. A quick Google search revealed that this Certificate can be obtained from the ACTUAL NY State for $25 and the company is suspicious. It pays to do your research.

When you are waiting for your certificate back from the state after filing your LLC, this SCAM business will send you a letter in the mail, asking you to send a check for $87.25 to get your copy. The letterhead and language are incredibly convincing. I knew something wasn't quite right because our business has two more weeks to go in the local paper before we can even finish the filing process.

These people are a SCAM! They wanted money saying that this was the last step to certifying my LLC business.

I received the same letter as everyone else requesting $87.25 for a NY Certificate of Status. Why is this allowed to continue? It is challenging enough to start a new business, this type of misleading and price gouging solicitation is deceitful. When you pose as an official NYS service, put a "Respond By" date and ask for 350% more than what it actually costs, whether it's fraud or not, it's wrong and should be stopped. Thankfully, I didn't send money but how many people need to pay an absurd price for something they don't need and in many cases, not receive it before it's shut down? On my letter they have a physical address of 911 Central Ave Westgate Plaza, Suite 132 in Albany. Can't someone visit to see it's legitmacy?

If anyone really NEEDS the Certificate of Status, the official website is:

https://www.dos.ny.gov/corps/faq_certificates_under_seal.page.asp

It costs $25

I received a letter in the mail, stating that "Your Articles have been filed with the secretary of state and are complete...etc etc" This letter also, asked to Confirm Business Name & Document Number are Correct, etc etc. I was sitting at my computer and I Googled the address of this supposed NY Certificate Service at 911 Central Ave, Westgate Plaza, Albany, NY. Many people said, it was a SCAM. I immediately called the Better Business Bureau, but I missed the hours in which to speak to a representative. The recording gave this website to lodge a complaint. This fraudulent company was/is soliciting a check/money order. I did not send a check/money order.

I realized I was scammed. It’s just a piece of paper with a fake notary ! How do I go about a refund?!

I sent a Money order worth 87.25 to register my new company with the state but I asked around about the form and was told it is fraud because my company was already filed with the state. I believe it was to register my company with the state and ensure that the state certifies my new company.

Ny certificate service acting as a giverment agency. They send mail to small business owners asking for a payment of $87.25 to prove business existence. They also ask for full name, business name, email and phone number. They add a deadline date as well.

They are from 911 central ave Westgate plaza, suite 132. Albany, New york 12206.

I received a letter that appeared to come from New York State. I filled out a check for $87.25. Something just did not seem right, not sure what. Then, since I am a new business, I checked online about this service. I thought it was related to my requirement to publish my LLC in local newspapers and that I had met the requirements through a legitimate company that I used to publish the existence of my LLC. However this company "NY Certificate Service" seems to be a scam. It says in tiny print where you are supposed to cut out your return slip with your check "This is not a government agency." Luckily I checked this company out on the internet and found out it was a scam. I just saved myself $87.25

Recently incorporated my business and received an 'official' looking form in the mail regarding a NY Certificate of Status. When I saw the amount of $87.25 for the certificate I researched on the NYS.gov website and found that this is not a 'required' certificate, but may be necessary to have for some businesses. The fee the government is charging is $25.

I am posting this information to help stack the deck on this company. This is misleading and could easily confuse an inexperienced person who is trying to comply with state requirements when first establishing a business. Companies like these should be required to post "THIS IS A SOLICITATION" or "THIS IS NOT A BILL" or "THIS IS NOT A GOVERNMENT AGENCY" in a LARGE point font at the top of the page. This company does include the statement: "This is not a government agency" on their piece, but it is in very, very small print in the middle of the page. Not satisfactory.

This company presents itself as a necessary part of the formation of an LLC, but it is not. The letter they send is obviously trying to seem like an official government document and implies that you need to pay the $87.25 fee in order for your LLC to be fully formed. They are obviously trying to take advantage of people who are not well versed in the process of forming an LLC. They are trying to make money by scamming small business owners. Despicable.

I wrote away for my Certificate and spoke to a guy names Kevin, and guy named Jesse, and and unnamed girl. Kevin on 3 different occasions said he mailed the certificate out which was a red flag since I never received it and have never had a problem receiving my mail. When I asked Kevin who his supervisor was he told me that he was the supervisor- that they were short on staff. He also gave me a government phone number and said that they could email me me my certificate. When I google searched Kevin's name and nothing came up I realized this was a scam. This is a fraudulent company and a complete scam. They are pretending to be the state of NY and giving you the state's phone number when you don't receive your certificate. I am including a photo of the letter I received in the mail.
