Type of a scam Government Agency Imposter
After she finished yawning, she launched into her script. What I took from the confusing monologue was that she was calling on behalf of the Ontario Government regarding home warranties and carbon offset credits. She asked me to confirm my municipal address, that I was the homeowner, and whether my home was a house or a condominium. She then asked me again if I was the homeowner and whether I lived in a house or a condominium.
At this point, her script became confusing as she was speaking very quickly. To make the call seem legitimate she asked me to get a pen and paper to write down the call recording number she was going to provide me with. She talked about me receiving credits and asked how I would like to be reimbursed. I told her to send a cheque in the mail. She read from her script as to why that wasn't possible and asked for my bank account number to directly deposit the rebate funds.
I asked her where she was calling from. She replied "Ontario". I said, "Ontario where?" "Are you calling on behalf of a government agency?" and she said "Toronto, suite 201, 4544 Dufferin Street." I asked for the name of the company or organization she was calling on behalf of and she replied "Ontario Warranty Services". I asked her to hold.
I searched Google and visited the website at https://ontariowarrantyservices.com/. I told her that she was not calling on behalf of the government because the website ended in .com and that she was calling people during a pandemic and asking them for their bank account details. She repeated her claims that she was calling regarding Ontario rebates. I told her "nice try; I'm not a sucker." She said thank you and goodbye.
I then called the number on the website: 1.877.659.3220. An automated system answered announcing that I had "reached the offices of The Home Protection Group. If you're calling regarding a phone call you just received, please press 1 now. If you're calling regarding your warranty protection coverage and would like to speak to a customer service specialist, press 3 and someone will be with you shortly. Ple[censored]d the line." (If you don't press any numbers, the automated greeting repeats in a loop.)
I tried pressing 1 first: "Thank you for calling The Home Protection Group. Our office is currently closed. Please call back during business hours and we will be happy to assist you. Thank you again for calling The Home Protection Group of Companies."
I called back and pressed 3 and received the same automated message I received when I pressed 1. (This is in conflict with the messaging on their website that states: "Call us 24/7, get a live person. No automated phone menus. No 30-minute wait. Personal connection is at the heart of our customer commitment.")
No doubt the 5-star reviews on Google are fake and created by the company or paid reviewers and that they've deleted all negative (and truthful) reviews. Likewise with the "Testimonials" on their website.
I hope my complaint helps prevent others from being taken advantage of by these companies. Their unscrupulous attempts to defraud innocent people are vile on a normal day, and unconscionable in the midst of a pandemic.
