Type of a scam Employment
The next day at the appointed time I tried to call this ID, with no pick up. I then got a Skype chat message saying that the interview would be conducted over text. I spent about an hour answering the questions in detail concerning my experience and fitness for the graphic design role. After the interview they said to report back to the Skype message the next day at 9am EST. I messaged the next day and was told I got the job. I would be sent the Employment offer letter and W4. I filled these out and sent them back. I was then told I would be emailed a check to buy office supplies to set up my home office from a designated vendor. I was emailed a check for $2460.44 and told to deposit it via mobile deposit to my Wells Fargo account, and send the bank confirmation. After depositing the check I sent the confirmation. I was then asked to send the $400 that were immediately available through a Zelle payment to the "vendor" to Michael Moffitt at [email protected].
At this point I became very suspicious and asked the HR rep to confirm his identity, or give me a number to call to confirm that this interview process was standard, because I was making a lump payment to an unknown individual on behalf of the company. I began to look into Planet Art LLC more, and found that they don't have a number on their website. I also tried to find Keith Berglund on LinkedIn and found a profile saying he had been there for 7 months, but there was no picture. Also the [email protected] did not pull up any results in a google search. He made excuses about company policy, that I would be connected with someone when I got my employee ID, that he was like a brother to me (which struck me as very unprofessional) and to trust his assurance in the validity of everything. I had already given this email personal info like my SS#, address, phone number, legal name, mother's maiden name, spouse's name and number through the offer letter and W4.
All this to say I feel pretty sick about the info I gave them, as well as how much time and energy I spent pursing this "job".
