“Hi mom I dropped my phone in the toilet and broke it, I'm texting you from a cashier's phone. Text my new number now please 604 901 6372.”
I called 604-901-6372 & no one picked-up. I then texted back and forth with the person I thought was my daughter. When I asked which daughter it was, they replied:
“ Hi, the only one clumsy enough your eldest lol. I'm so mad at myself. It fell out of my pocket into the toilet.”
When I asked why she had a BC # (because she lives in Quebec), they replied:
“ I don't know it's just a prepaid sim I bought from the gas station. I've tried putting my phone in rice and it made my phone turn back on but my old sim still has no signal. I've got lines going across my screen from the water damage too.”
I then tried calling the “new #” again and I got this response by text:
“The phone is the last of my worries right now, I'm so stressed out. I've got a bill I need to pay today and when I try to pay it from my account it's sending the security code to my old number. The bank said I can pair my new number if I go into the bank but then it will put a security hold on my account for 48 hours but if I'm late with my payment then there's going to be interest.“
Then, I asked how much the interest would be, asking if I could help and telling “her” I loved her, and they replied:
“It's $800 interest that's why I'm so stressed out. Could you do the e-transfer to the person for me and I'll pay you back when my new number is paired? Love you too.”
Then, when I asked how the interest was so high, the “texter” told me “she” owed Money to a Loan Shark. Then I asked “her” if I could call her and how a Loan Shark got involved, they replied:
“It's a long story and my calls aren't working can you please just help it's urgent I have the money to pay you back. Can I send you the info”
I then used her name, and asked her a few questions that only she would be able to answer, telling “her” I needed to know it was her.. They replied with:
“ [email protected]
Poe LeBlanc
$1850
Put my name in the transfer message please. I love you (with a heart emoji)”
The person didn’t ask my identifying questions like her middle names and where was she born. I then looked back through the texts and realized at I received the first text at 7:14pm BC time, which would have been 10:14pm Quebec time, I then told the number I was reporting to RCMP and I did this because most stores where she lives in Quebec close at 9pm, and the “Loan Shark” comment was a red flag for me. . I then texted my actual oldest daughter’s # (instead of calling her because it was now after midnight her time) and she responded around 4am BC time that it wasn’t her and her phone was fine.
