I received a phone call, and the caller said they were working with my phone company to switch landline phones over to digital because the utility's copper wiring was going to be removed. They wanted to send me one device per phone in my home and that my bill would drop to $45 monthly. Since there was no cost at this point I said OK. They texted me from (818) 688-7387 and told me how to respond to the text, and it sounded urgent. The caller was giving me an order number and said the new device would be billed from RingPlanet. This was the first mention of the company's name, and the first red flag. As I thought more about my phone setup, I realized that none of my devices used the phone line from the street, all my devices use my fiberoptic internet. The caller was insistent that my phones were using the copper line coming in from the street. As I disagreed with him, he put his manager on the phone. She explained that all the phone companies were getting rid of copper lines because of poor call quality, and I need their digital devices to use my phone. She asked me how much I paid for phone service, and I told her to tell me if she was working with my phone provider. She admitted that she wasn't with my phone provider, she was with RingPlanet. I told them I wasn't their customer and bid them good day. They misrepresented themselves as my phone provider and tried to sell me equipment I didn't need for a monthly fee under the guise that my phone bill would be lower.
