Can You Hear Me Scam Reports & Reviews (534)

In January or February 2017, I received a phone call on a weekday, sometime in the early afternoon. I usually reject and block immediately any # I do not recognize; but I had been expecting several return calls from various companies I was handling business with that day, and sometimes they call back from a different department or extension than the one you might have dialed. So I answered my phone, and a man kept saying, "Can you hear me??" and I kept asking, "What company are you calling from??". I couldn't understand what he was saying, so I just hung up & deleted thstartI didn't really think any more about ut uuntilthe next day, when I started hearing reports on the news, and just people in general, talking about this scam. I am very grateful that I did not unwittingly say "yes" when I answered this call. There were a few times after that (sometimes a woman; sometimes a man), who would call (when I was expecting a business call) and try to run the same scam, but I would just hang up without even saying anything, as soon as they said, "Can you hear me??"

The lady on the line said that she was calling from a recorded line and asked if I could hear her ok. I said yes. This just happened, so I'm not sure if they will use the recording.

I answered the phone from an unknown number, only because I was expecting a call (for a job offer). Otherwise, I always let it go to voicemail. I answered, said "Hello" and the other voice also said "Hello" along with something inaudible like they were trying to say something, but got cut off. After a few seconds of silence, the voice said, "Can you hear me?" I responded back by saying "Yes", thinking I was talking to a real person. After a few moments of silence I asked, "who is this?" and then I found out I was entered to win a $200 cruise sweepstakes. Immediately, I hung up the phone, but then I remembered that there was a scam going around by trying to get people to say yes. I will now register on the DO NOT CALL Registry and report the number to the FCC as well. I will be checking my bank and credit statements regularly and I am hoping nothing more will come of this.

I also remember before they said "Can you hear me?" there was a high pitched beep, like the dial tone you hear after leaving someone a message, and your voice is recorded... UGHHHHH I wish I would have realized what it might have been but it happened so fast. I didn't really think about it since there was another inaudible sound just a few moments before. Lesson learned!

I received a call today, and it popped up on my screen, saying Can you hear me, Can you hear me.

Caller said, I'm not selling anything. I'm with ? agency(talked very fast did not understand name of agency). Then said," is it safe for you to talk? I responded Yes without thinking. Caller immediately hung up. I attempted to call the number back several times and would get a busy signal. Normally, I don't answer calls that I don't recognize but this call came through on my cell phone

- Richmond, VA, USA

Asked "Can you hear me okay?" to prompt a "yes" reply.

Tricked me into saying "yes" by asking if I could hear them. Now I am afraid I will be taken advantage of.

- Richmond, VA, USA

They asked if I could hear them. I said yes and they immediately hung up.

- Hoschton, GA, USA

A woman named Monica called me and asked to speak to someone other than myself. I told her she had the wrong number and she repeated me by asking me if she had the wrong number. I should’ve hung up at that point but I instinctively said “yes” and I heard a click right before I answered. I believe this was a scam where they get you to say yes to use it against you as evidence on a purchase of some sort.

- Canton, GA, USA

On October 25, 2017 I answered a call from what appears to be a Head Hunter, which proceeded to say they were calling answering an application for employment placed by me. Before I could ask anything the female in the other side of the line said, lets see what we can do with the information we have, but can you hear me O.K.? Not being aware at that particular moment of any thing I answered yes. The line went dead, so I called the number back and got choices for 1 or 2 prompt. I did not choose any and hanged up. If you call the number of Scammer above you get the recording I heard. Now I have to let my bank know what happened plus the CB's. My local police cant do much until a crime is committed. I spoke to Clark Howard (consumer advocate in Atlanta) and one of the suggestions was to let your organization know to help prevent future victims.

- Lawrenceville, GA, USA

Used is this "my name " and i said yes

Got a call and they asked if it was me on the phone and i stupidly said "yes". Called # back and it was an unrelated business, but I'm nervous that they will use my "yes" to enroll in services.
