Type of a scam Other
My wife called United Airlines using 800-864-8831 on October 8 in the morning. She mistakenly dialed 8831 instead of 8331 - the actual United Airlines number. She talked to a lady who claimed to be Michelle. The purpose of the call was to change the name on a ticket - one letter only - for a person who was traveling to interview for a position at our church. Michelle claimed my wife had reached United Airlines. Michelle said the charge would be $225. Because of the urgency (flight was Oct 11), my wife agreed to the charge.
She called United in the afternoon to change the name on the ticket again - this time using the correct number. The change requested in the morning led to another incorrect spelling. She was not charged in the afternoon for that change. I also called United later to confirm there were no charges for a name change. That was confirmed. The United agent I spoke with said she had talked to someone the previous week who had received a similar charge. She speculated that this was some sort of a scam.
Let me know if you need further explanation.
We called the incorrect number today and reached Michelle. There was an argument. Finally, after supposedly checking with someone, Michelle told us a credit would be given to our VISA card in a few days. We are awaiting that credit, but will also be monitoring the charges on our VISA card.
