However, when she got the mail, she found a letter with her name and address (see attached) That's when she believed it was real.
She called the person back and was told the check might have been destroyed, but he would do what he could do to help her. Also, she should not show the letter to anyone. She was told that she needed a tax person before claiming the money. He could arrange a tax person and she would retain more of the money, than if she got her own tax person. He also wanted to know how much money she had. She said just enough for her rent and funeral.
I went to her house, looked at the letter and knew immediately that it was a scam. Envelope had no return address, stamp came from Canada. No Publishers Clearing House logo. When I called the number, there was an answering machine. I hung up and contacted Publishers Clearing House and they confirmed the scam.
I called the number back and said do not call (used my mother's name) back because it was a fraud and it was being investigated. The person still called my mother. She told "Chris" that she knew it was a scam and hung up.
If I hadn't intervened, my mother was going to move forward with this scam.
