Offered work at home job selling insurance, required I obtain state license to do so using their online coursework for a $100 fee.

- Missoula, MT, USA • Mar 18, 2024

Interviewed as though for an actual position at a job with training and growth. After the interview, I was told that they would like me to join and sent a link to an official application/onboarding process. At the end of the process I was told i needed to pay $199 to pay for "training/licensing and a background check". I did so, then after I started looking more into the company. It then appeared to me then that it was a multi level marketing / pyramid scheme set up, through a company with a very short history. Further it appears that the founder is currently involved with an active fraud investigation in california. I then attempted to try to get my money back and was told "you can try, but it's not worth your time". During this process, i was also told different reasons on what the money was for. It constantly changed from "its for licensing", versus "its for a background check". It was never clearly explained that the whole point of the company was to try to get others to join. Further, they attempted to make it seem as though the company has been around for years, but in realty has only been around for a couple of months. As of right now I am still out the $200.

- Oviedo, FL, USA • Mar 14, 2024

I was interviewed through a chat site (Microsoft Teams) I was offered a job on day 2. I have an offer letter but there is no phone number or address on the letter. They want to send me a check for me to use to buy equipment. Red flag.

- Knoxville, TN, USA • Mar 14, 2024

Did the same thing as above but wanted everything to be put on my cell phone account. Offered to pay our entire phone bill. I blocked it all as soon as they said for me to get 2 watches and an iPad. Why would I need two watches? I just blocked them on everything. And changed all passwords and let my cell company know. I also have requested EVERY account text or call me for any changes.

I experienced something similar.

I applied for a job on ZipRecruiter. I was contacted and told that the interview process would be via teams so I assumed it would be via video it was via text on teams. It was very lengthy, detailed and professional after everything was completed they said that they would contact me by 9 AM next morning and update me on the status of my employment. Well the job was offered me to be an executive assistant. There is no formal hiring process afterwards. It was a simple text asking me for my name, phone number email address, etc. and I was told that a check would be mailed to me so I can purchase my own equipment when I asked for a call Leman called me immediately, and he went by the name, James, Washington And he simply just explained that every company has a different hiring process and that this was theirs and that I can’t move forward until I provide him those details so he can send me the check to then have me purchase my own equipment once I deposited the check. It felt wrong and it didn’t feel formal or legit. I went along with it as far as I did because mostly everything is online or remote these days, so I was being open to the experience, but it just felt too off once I replied, and asked him the amount of the check that he will be sending for me to purchase equipment, I have no reply even though he’s been replying pretty consistently for the last 24 hours. Once I started to question the hiring process and the check out, I stopped getting replies.

I responded to text message from a recruiter- Whitney Allen that claims to work with Dice to ask if I was interested in position making up to $200.00 per day, said someone would reach out to me. I gave her my email address and was told they communicate via WhatsApp. A couple days later I received a message via WhatsApp from someone named Elsa, I went through the training and was told I earned $50.00. I was later advised to receive to funds I would need to set up Klever wallet which I did. We spent several hours trying to withdraw the $50.00 and transfer to my bank account. I'm now very thankful it did not work out. However, when I kept requesting to speak with someone or to set up a Teams or Zoom meeting I was given the brush off. I advised Elsa that I did not have a good feeling about the process, I thanked her for her time and advised I did not want to move forward.

The next message I received from her was that I was wasting her time and if all people of my minority like this, she when on to say we are selfish and only thing of ourselves. She suggested that I stop looking for a job because no company would be willing to hire me. I was extremely surprised at how vicious and cruel she became because I decided to step away from situation. I asked her to not contact me again. She stated I had a low IQ and she was a millionaire.

The scammer offered me a job position. They started with saying to upload my resume which I did. Then they said I made it to the next step of the hiring process please answer these interview questions all through email. Which I did. Then they said I was hired and they would be sending me a check which would be used to purchase equipment and software and to email HR my name address and phone number. I thought it was suspicious to send me a check so I called Florida blue and they said that they don’t use the email @floridabluecarreers.

Asked me to use an app I never heard of. “Wired” I thought it would be face to face via video. The conversation seemed predictable. I did not use names. Except that I am in NY move to Atlanta. The conversation got really weird. I told them this is not a good fit for me. Then he got a pushy about the job and what they offered, you can make you own hours, they would provide you with the equipment needed for your home office. I told him no, and thanks again. The contact did not stop. I just blocked the app and changed passwords.

Did not mention where he found me looking for a part-time remote job. Offered me a job for $800 a week and would only take 5 hours a week. I would be his personal assistant. He traveled often and for extended periods of time. He would send me a “guaranteed certified check” for my first week’s pay. I was to go to Walmart and buy needed supplies for a charity he donated to every week, using the extra money included in the check. For my salary I would be expected to make plane reservations, keep his calendar current, and other such items as they were needed. I found the same scam, almost word for word, on Reddit/scams. Different Dr names, no address given. Some recipients were asked for personal info. I was not.

Once I told them that I would be sure to send an image of the check to the hiring company. They told me good luck…. I told them how I felt and ended the conversation.

The scammer texted and his phone was android because I saw green screen instead of blue bubbles. They wanted me to say yes to be WhatsApp. I questioned why and said could not find his LinkedIn. He said had none and how is that real if is a recruiter. Kept referring to his manager to connect on WhatsApp and I said what is the name. Then there was no response so I blocked the number that had an OR area code and deleted it. I did give my email at first to ask for more information about the job but that’s why wanted to connect on WhatsApp!
