Internal Revenue Service IRS - IMPOSTER Reports & Reviews (1072)

- Baltimore, MD, USA

Individual claimed to be named Ethan Black. Had all of my information. Told me I owed taxes from 2010 - 2015. Wanted me to pay $7860. Provided a Case # CP10173T. Stated there was a bench warrant out for my arrest, and letters were sent out. Realized I had gotten refunds over the past number of years, so this didn't make any sense. He also had an outdated address. There were many red flags.

- Wichita Falls, TX, USA

I received a missed call and voicemail from an unknown number ranging from Apple Valley, California. The voicemail transcript read, "Ignoring this message would be an intentional second attempt to avoid initial appearance before the magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense. The number to reach us is 760-810-4187." This voice message scared me because I did not know what it was regarding. So I returned the call, I got an answer right away and it was a woman claiming to be named Michelle Wright. She told me she could tell me what the call was regarding if she could first verify some info. She asked me for my name and my address. Then she proceeded to tell me she was an officer with the IRS and that this call was regarding that I owed approximately $2100.00 dollars to the IRS over a tax period from 2010-2015 and that I had three pending criminal charges against my name for this amount. They told me I made a flaw on my taxes and that I made it intentionally and that they were going to submit a warrant for my arrest. I told her I had not heard anything of this issue. She said they had sent me letters and even sent an officer to my door, but I was not at home at the time the officer came. She asked me to verify some personal info to see if I was being honest, and if I was honest, she would consider cancelling the arrest warrant. She asked me if I had ever received a traffic ticket, and if I had any criminal charges against me. I answered her accordingly. She said, "Now that I know you are being honest with me, I will transfer you to an officer that can discuss options with you to resolve this matter." She then transferred me to a gentleman who asked me how soon could I get the money to resolve my amount owed. He pushed for it to be as soon as possible and told me that if I borrowed the money from an institution or a friend that I could not under any circumstances tell them what the money was for. He said he would call me back in a few hours to see if had gotten the money ready for them. That was the entire conversation. I immediately called the IRS and checked my transcripts with a real agent who assured me that it was a scam call and that I owed no amount to the IRS.
